Everything You’ll Want to Know About Toyota Safety Sense

An Extra Set of Eyes to Guide Your Drives

There’s only so much you can do to drive safely. After all, you look before you merge, you try to keep a close eye on the traffic ahead while expecting the unexpected, and you try to remain in your lane until it’s time to take your exit.

But, unfortunately, blind spots exist. Other drivers and pedestrians make questionable decisions around your car, and as humans, our minds tend to wander. It’s in these situations that collisions occur and your safety can even be at risk.

Thankfully, Toyota Safety Sense is here to bring some extra security to your drives and help you overcome the above issues with a variety of sensors on the latest Toyota models.

Speaking of Toyota models, stop by Rivertown Toyota in Columbus, GA to test-drive any of the newest vehicles that catch your eye. Until then, here’s a look at how Toyota Safety Sense will change the way you drive.

What is Toyota Safety Sense?

To answer the big question on all our minds, Toyota Safety Sense (TSS)* is a bundle of active safety features. In other words, these settings were designed to protect you and your passengers while you cruise down your local roads and highways. In the process, these assistance systems can even make your drives easier.

Most of the features in the Toyota Safety Sense suite work with sensors around your vehicle. This is how your car senses traffic ahead, recognizes lines on the road and spots oncoming traffic to reduce your chances of collisions and dents
What Features Come with Toyota Safety Sense?

When you get behind the wheel of a Toyota with Toyota Safety Sense equipped, you’ll have six different systems keeping your drives safe and secure.

To help you prevent any ugly fender benders, the Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection looks out for cars and pedestrians ahead when you’re cruising at slow speeds. Upon detecting an imminent collision, you’ll hear audible and visual alerts letting you know to slow down or get ready to merge into the next lane. If you don’t take action, your vehicle can even hit the brakes for you to help you avoid a collision.

When you’re cruising down I-185 to LaGrange during rush hour, the Dynamic Radar Cruise Control removes the white knuckles and stress that comes with navigating the busy highways. You set the speed and distance to keep from cars ahead, and your Toyota automatically takes over and slows down for traffic.

Compliment Dynamic Radar Cruise Control with Lane Tracing Assist. This feature uses the lines on the road to keep your vehicle centered in its lane while controlling your speed and distance from traffic. With this feature active, your Toyota does most of your highway driving for you.

When you’re not using Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Lane Departure Alert helps you stay centered in your lane with audio and visual alerts the instant you leave your lane unintentionally. With EPS active, you’ll also get steering assists to help you stay within your lane and avoid any sideswipes with drivers in nearby lanes. For TSS 2.0 systems, your vehicle also recognizes the side of the road, and it will issue alerts to keep you from driving off highways and streets altogether.

Not sure what the speed limit is? There’s a good chance your vehicle spotted the speed limit sign thanks to Road Sign Assist. Anytime you pass street signs (speed limit, stop signs, do not enter, yield, etc.), your Toyota will display them for you to see on your multi-information display (MID) to keep you informed of nearby conditions.

When the sun goes down, your Automatic High Beams come out. And using a camera on your windshield, this feature toggles between high and low beams depending on what’s appropriate for the lighting and lowering the light as a courtesy for other drivers on the road.
